The Ultimate Medical AI: What Should It Do for GPs?
Artificial intelligence is steadily making its way into everyday general practice. From dictation tools to workflow assistants, we’re seeing more and more solutions that aim to reduce administrative burden and improve efficiency. But what would the ultimate medical AI look like for GPs working on the frontline?
As both a practising GP and the founder of MBS Pro, I often ask myself this question. Even with the tools we’ve built, I don’t think the job is done yet — in fact, it’s only the beginning.
What I Want as a GP
When I think about what would truly make a difference in my consulting room, a few priorities come to mind:
Pre-consult insight – knowing what the patient wants before they walk in. A structured intake can set the tone for the consult and save precious minutes.
Preventive care reminders – visibility of what preventive care and vaccines are due (CST, FOBT, shingles, flu shots, etc.).
Contextual clinical support – instant access to guidelines and treatment options for the problem the patient presents with.
MBS visibility – knowing at a glance which Medicare items are due and ensuring care plans, health assessments, or medication reviews are updated on time.
Evidence-based practice – quick access to up-to-date references, without the friction of navigating multiple external sites.
In short: I want an AI that reduces the “what am I missing?” stress in consults, so I can focus on my patients.
How MBS Pro Fits In
While no tool is perfect, MBS Pro has been built with many of these goals in mind. Some of the features already helping GPs include:
Pre-Consult Assistant – patients can complete structured pre-consult questionnaires, giving you insight into their priorities before they step into the room.
MBS Planner – real-time reminders of preventive care, chronic disease management, and eligibility for item numbers such as 699 (Heart Health), 715 (Indigenous Health Assessments), and 965 (Chronic Disease Management).
True Combination Billing – compliant templates and documentation generation to optimise item use without audit risk.
Guideline Access – integrated search portals for clinical guidelines, so you’re not flicking between browsers during a consult.
PRODA Integration – instant eligibility checks on MBS items for every patient.
PBS Authority Shortcuts – quick access to authority requirements, saving time on prescribing.
Care Plan Generator – streamlined documentation to support chronic disease management reviews and team care arrangements.
Together, these features don’t just “scribe” the consultation. They actively help you run a smoother, more efficient, and more compliant practice.
The Future of Medical AI
The next frontier is context-aware support. Imagine a patient presenting with migraine: the AI could surface questions like “What is the first-line treatment for migraines according to RACGP guidelines?” or “Which MBS items are relevant for this patient’s preventive care?” — not to make decisions for you, but to give you the right information at the right time.
This is the kind of AI I want to see in every practice: a true co-pilot that:
saves time,
reduces cognitive load,
improves billing compliance, and
ultimately improves patient care.
Over to You
Every GP works differently, and every practice has its own pain points. That’s why I’d love to hear from you:
